Water you mean I should eat less meat?

TWO THOUSAND gallons of water is a heavy price to pay for some food, especially when we're told on a daily basis to save as much water as we can. Well, how could we save 2000 gallons of water? You could stop flushing your toilet for about 9 months, or potentially stop showering for about 8 months, OR you could not eat that 1 burger for lunch...

There's a lot to think about when deciding what to have for lunch. Some of us think about the price, others think about the flavours or the nutritional value, but should we ever think about how much water goes into making our food. Coca-cola, for example, use 3-5 litres of water to produce just one litre of coke. As for chicken nuggets, they cost about 500 gallons of water to produce just 1lb.

It's not just a water heavy system over here in rainy England either. California is currently a first world area being hit by a severe drought, and the shocking thing there is that 47% of all of the sun shine state's water is used for meat production and consumption.

A statistic that would shock even the coldest of hearts 82% of starving children live in countries where "human standard" food is fed to animals which are then killed and sold as meat in wealthier countries. How can this be something we accept? It's wasteful and shameful -- and needs to stop.

How can we reduce the amount of water that is used in making our food?

Wasting less food is probably an obvious one but we all still do it. Just buy what you need when you need it and you'll throw less away.

Perhaps feeding people healthy and nutritious food instead of feeding it to animals just before they are slaughtered would be a good place to start.

Growing your own fruit and vegetables is a good way of saving water because if everybody did it, big consumer farmers would need to grow less, resulting in less water being used.

Eating less meat can have an astronomical impact on the amount of water you would be using and will also positively impact your body.

Buying from environmentally sustainable sources is a great method for reducing your negative impact on the world's water table. Local farms have large operating costs in comparison to their size so tend to be less wasteful. This can only be a good thing that passes over to the consumer.

The Internet is a great place to look for advice, help and information on water usage with food. Gotdrought is one where you can search through individual food items to see how much water is used in your making of your meal.

Life is dependent on water, so don't waste it.
